The Flora Incognita initiative invites individuals passionate about botany, whether budding photographers or seasoned botanists, to contribute to our collective knowledge. Our Flora Capture App allows users to document native wild plants from various perspectives while ensuring that these specimens remain undisturbed in their natural habitats.

Users have the flexibility to upload their observations either on-site or later from the comfort of their homes, where our team of botanists will assist in identifying the plants. High-quality images of flowering wild plants captured from consistent angles are crucial for training our image recognition algorithms within the Flora Incognita App. Furthermore, these images facilitate the testing of advanced image recognition techniques, ultimately improving species identification capabilities across our free application.

We are particularly eager to partner with experienced botanists who can enhance our image database, specifically focusing on species that pose identification challenges.

Important Note: At this time, we are unable to include ornamental and garden plants in our database.

The development of the Flora Incognita apps is a collaborative effort between the Technical University Ilmenau and the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry in Jena. This project received funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation, and other regional environmental agencies, and it has been acknowledged as an official project of the UN Decade of Biodiversity.
